Firing the Kiln

Here are the results of the most recent kiln firings, first a bisque firing and then the glaze. The pictures below show the glaze results first, since they’re more exciting, then the bisque results for the same pots.

For those not in the know, ceramic pieces usually go through two firings in the kiln. The first, called the bisque, is done to a lower temperature. I bisque fire to about 1800 degrees fahrenheit. This hardens the pieces so they’re easier to work with and creates a porous surface that allows the glazes to better adhere. The glaze firing comes next after glazes are applied. That one goes up to 2100 degrees.

I have a bunch of favorites from this firing. I love the green pianos with red keys. I love the house perched on a stump with a wraparound stair. And I love the white and blue bowls. Two of those are going to special friends as a wedding present.
